Measuring Success: A Journey from a 985 University with a GPA of 3.5 to the United States
As a student from a 985 university in China with a GPA of 3.5, I always dreamed of studying abroad. The idea of experiencing a different culture and education system excited me, and I thought going to the United States would be the perfect place to continue my academic journey. However, I quickly realized that it was not an easy journey to embark on. In this article, I will share my story of how I navigated the rigorous application process and what I learned along the way.
The first step of the process was to decide which universities I wanted to apply to. I knew that I wanted to pursue a degree in finance, so I looked for universities that had strong programs in this field. I also wanted to ensure that the universities were accredited and recognized globally. After researching and consulting with friends and family, I narrowed down my list to five universities. They were all well-known and prestigious universities that I had heard of and respected for their academic excellence.
Next, I began preparing for the application process. One of the requirements for international students was to take the TOEFL exam, which tests English proficiency. I had taken English courses in my university, but I still needed extra preparation to achieve a high score on the TOEFL. I enrolled in an English course, where I learned grammar and vocabulary and practiced speaking and writing. The course was intensive, but it helped me improve my English skills and prepare for the TOEFL exam. I also took the GMAT, which is the standard test for graduate business schools in the United States. The GMAT tests analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills, which are all essential for success in a business program.
Once I had completed the standardized tests, I began working on my application essays. The essays were a critical part of the application process, as they allowed me to showcase my personality, interests, and qualifications. I spent several weeks drafting, editing, and refining my essays to ensure that they represented me accurately and impressively. I also asked my professors and friends for feedback, which helped me strengthen my essays.
After submitting my application, I entered a waiting period that felt like an eternity. I anxiously checked my email every day, hoping to receive an acceptance letter. Finally, after several weeks, I received an email that changed my life. The email was from one of the universities I had applied to, and it was a letter of acceptance! I was overjoyed and grateful for the opportunity to study at such a prestigious institution.
However, getting accepted was only half the battle. The next step was to obtain a student visa, which required me to attend an interview at the US embassy. The interview was nerve-wracking, as I had to answer questions about my intentions in the United States and my ties to my home country. I also had to provide documentation that proved my ability to pay for my education and living expenses. Fortunately, the interview went smoothly, and I was granted a student visa. I was thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to study in the United States.
Studying in the United States has been an incredible experience so far. I have had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, learn from renowned professors, and challenge myself academically. I have also been able to experience American culture, which has been eye-opening and enriching. However, I have also faced challenges, such as adapting to a new environment, adjusting to a different education system, and dealing with homesickness. But, these challenges have helped me grow and become more resilient.
Looking back on my journey from a 985 university with a GPA of 3.5 to the United States, I realize that it was not an easy path to take. It required determination, hard work, and patience. However, the rewards have been immeasurable. I have gained new perspectives, expanded my knowledge, and developed new skills. I have also become more confident in myself and my abilities. Studying abroad may not be for everyone, but for those who are willing to take on the challenge, it can be a transformative experience.
